REPORT - NATIONAL HORSE TRIALS (THOMASTOWN & DISTRICT RIDING CLUB)
Thomastown & District RC again made their mark on the National Horse Trials last weekend at Annaharvey Farm in Tullamore, Co. Offaly. The cream of the crop were certainly out, but the plucky Thomastown & District girls left their mark across a number of the classes!
Foot perfect conditions for the dressage phase and inviting fences for the Show Jumping were the order of the day, although competitors could not rest on their laurels as the cross country phase definitely took its prisoners in all classes and proved technical asks for both horse and rider in all grades. Not only were there Championship classes that competitors had been traveling country wide to qualify for, but also the normal graded classes, which led to a very busy day for the organizers and competitors alike.
Jenny Reid was the sole Open rider for Thomastown & District with the Cavalier Royal gelding Cavalier Sirocco. The partnership posted a clear round in the SJ and over the testing XC course and completed with a handful of time penalties to complete in overall 5th place which was a super achievement.
Jo Forde and the evergreen Western Rebel, emerged victorious in the Advanced Intermediate class completing on her dressage score after posting a superb display of jumping in the SJ phase and out on the demanding cross country course. Both relished the challenge and scooped the prize over six penalties clear of the 16 other competitors in this class.
Margaret Walsh and Dollar Boy and Therese Curran and Killossery German George were the Thomastown & District representatives in the Advanced Primary Championship class for the club. The latter posted a good dressage but were unable to complete the competition.
Margaret and Dollar Boy completed on their dressage score of 35.3, with two superb jumping rounds to complete in 7th spot. This was a brilliant effort in this hotly contested class of 27 qualified riders nationwide that contested this class
Advanced Primary Section 1 saw Carmel Murphy and Glenbrook Colleen posted a good dressage of 33.7 and were unlucky to add 4 penalties in the show jumping phase. They however made amends with a clear round across the country to complete 4 penalties clear of her rivals in the Advanced Primary section 1 in which 25 competitor were present, giving Thomastown & District a second victory of the day.
Advanced Primary Section 2 saw Gillian Hennessy and her superb partner Stanley only 2 penalties shy of giving Thomastown & District a third victory after a superb display of jumping across the country and the coloured poles to complete in 2nd spot overall in the 23 competitor strong section and overall a good end to a very productive season for the partnership.
Overall the Thomastown & District Team completed in 2nd place out of over 20 teams which is a brilliant achievement for the club.
